Hose
Co.#1 A Brief History
Hose Company No. 1 is located at 13 Grant Avenue East Rockaway,
New York. In
Nassau Counyty on Long Island. Directly behind St. Raymond’s
School. Hose Co. #1 was organized on September 24, 1908 by a group of
firefighters who felt it was necessary to provide adequate fire protection to
our residents on the North side of town. On May 18, 1921 we officially purchased
the property from John M. Clark
(a member) for $900.00.
Over the years
there have been many men to have served the department from Hose Co. #1, all of
which have dedicated their lives to serving the community. On September 27, 1918
tragedy struck Hose Co. #1 as we lost one of our members, Robert F. Garrison.
Killed in action in France during the First World War
On November 28,
1949 we sold our 1941 Mercury Engine to the Village for $1 in return for their
maintenance and replacement program we still use today, with the guarantee that
we would house and respond the vehicle to all alarms that we were called to.
This is the first record I could find of such a “deal” with the village
of
East Rockaway. On May 18, 1962 we purchased our current clubhouse from
Charles & Virginia Becker Jr. for $15,000. In that same year we
started receiving $2400 rent to store the apparatus in our truck room
bay.
Over our 100 years of service to the community, Hose Co. #1 has had
numerous vehicles under it’s direction and control including: A 1903
Bailey & Gleason, the original hose cart, which assisted Main Street’s
Tootsie at fires in the village, a 1926 Mack pumper, and American LaFrance
pumpers from 1938, 1950, and 1971. Our most recent pumper, a 1990 Pierce Lance
was refurbished in 2002 and will carry the members to fires for the next few
years.
The Grant Avenue firehouse currently houses the Lance, a Command
Post/ Rehabilitation unit, and a personnel-carrying van. We are also the
home of a fine group of firefighters of all ages and backgrounds who assist the
community on a daily basis for all fire and emergency medical needs of the
community. We currently have 36 active firefighters on roster. We also have 16
Life, Associate and Honorary members. At one time (back in 1970-71) Hose Company
# 1 was also home to New York's oldest living fireman, Delamater "Del" Denton.
